Vitamins Overview

March 30th, 2009 -- Posted in Vitamins | No Comments »

Vitamins are usually organic substances that are mainly divided in to two main categories:

• Water-soluble Vitamins: Vitamin B group and vitamin C, or ascorbic acid is water soluble. They are not stored in our body for so long.

• Fat-soluble Vitamins: Vitamin A, D, E and K are fat soluble vitamins and are absorbed and digested by the fats stored in our body.

Vitamins Overview is a vast topic so we have covered few areas.

The word vitamin is originated from “vitamine”, that was first used in 1911 for the group of compounds that were vital for life and each was imagined to have nitrogen containing component known as amine. But later it was discovered that not all vitamins contain nitrogen and neither all of them are amines.

Vitamins are not the source of energy to our body but they are essential for our life as they help in extracting energy known as coenzymes. They help to convert fat and carbohydrates to energy that helps in forming bones and tissues.

Vitamins and minerals help in preventing diseases that are caused due to the nutritional deficiencies such as scurvy, rickets, pellagra and beriberi. Vitamins protect us from heart damage and cancer. Vitamin C and E are when combined in high doses; it helps to reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Vitamins are not made in our body except for vitamin D that is made in our skin. They must be taken from dietary supplements. Vitamins we need depend much on our intake. Good sources should be taken daily.

If you are in a state of good health then you can take vitamins from balanced diet but if your metabolism is altered then you have to take additional vitamins because it will slow natural process of healing and repair.

Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), there is a misconception about this term, it is not the recommended intake of vitamins daily rather it provides you the guide for minimum intake of vitamins required to prevent deficiency in healthy people with good health and ability to maintain their nutritional status.

Other Nutritional Measures:

Following are the other nutritional measures:

• RDA’s
• Adequate Intakes(AI)
• Estimated Average Intakes(EAR)
• Tolerable Upper Intakes(UL)

Finally we conclude that vitamins are very important for our lives and good multivitamin intake is the base for better health and nutrition.

March 30th, 2009 -- Posted in Diabetes | No Comments »

Diabetes is perhaps one of the most common diseases of the modern era. We can say that our environment and out habits have a huge role to play in this regard but still the fact cannot be ignored that more and more people are falling prey to this long lasting disease each year.

There is no perfect cure for this disease thus those who are unfortunate enough to fall prey to this disease have only one option left and that is to control this disease as much as they can.

This is not as hard as it seems, although one must sacrifice a lot for this task but in the end a healthier life seems like a good reward for all that sacrifice. There are three things important for controlling diabetes i.e. diet, exercise and medication.

All these three are essential and if all of them are taken into consideration then a healthier life can be guaranteed.

Most people like to start with exercise because it sounds easy enough and inexpensive as well. Although the importance of diet and medication cannot be neglected, exercise is the best method for prevention and control of diabetes.

When the body is in high level of activity, it need energy which it gets from the burning of fats and glucose. The muscles utilize the energy released from burning up of fats and glucose to continue functioning actively.

During this activity the decrease in glucose level in the body signals the pancreas to relax the production of insulin and thus the levels of insulin gets lowered.

This low level of insulin signals the liver to release its storage of glucose into the blood to supply the muscles with enough glucose to burn up to create energy for use.

Thus the level of glucose in the liver storage drops so it has to converts amino acids, lactic acids and fats in the body into glucose to provide the muscles for their functioning.

If the activity is continued for a long enough period the body fats also start to compensate for the deficiency of fatty acids in the body which had been consumed up already thus the body fat also starts to decrease.

Thus considering the process involved in supplying energy to the body for exercise, one can see that exercise is the best way to utilize the stored fats and glucose and is therefore the best method for controlling diabetes.
